How the Group started

The following is reproduced from an article first published in The Rambler, national magazine of the Ramblers’ Association in Winter 2001

The idea for Derbyshire Family Rambling Group came from a Ramblers’ Association Family Rambling Day back in 1997 when more than 130 people turned up. It was obvious that parents wanted walks organised with children in mind, and the Group grew from there. Walking is good exercise and also relaxing - a break from the stress and routine of daily lives. Children especially are walking less and less these days and need physical exercise more than ever.

Around 100 families have taken part in walks over the first five years, enjoying day trips as well as Youth Hostel weekends. In 2000 & 2001, 52 families with children ranging from 3 to 14 years old walked with the Family Rambling Group. Parents and grand-parents brought children. Walks usually attract about 30-40 people, over half children. One walk was devised & led by then-seven year old Heather Smith, who wanted to show other children one of her favourite valleys.

The children love the outdoors. Walks are at a relaxed pace so they have plenty of time to stop off and explore, play games or do a light-hearted nature quiz. The emphasis is on having fun and the youngsters get to meet others of their own age and make good friends. Some, but not all, parents who come enjoyed walking before starting a family, and the group has given them the opportunity to renew their interest, at the same time as sharing a love of walking with their children.

The Group continues to evolve & change for reflect members’ interests, now offering both short easy walks for young children & longer walks for those with longer legs!
